Following a degree at University College London his research career in neuroscience included postdoctoral fellowships at The Rudolf Magnus Institute for Pharmacology in Utrecht and the University of St Andrews, Scotland before joining Organon BV, to run a discovery team at their laboratories in The Netherlands. Returning to the UK to join SmithKline Beecham, he assumed positions of increasing responsibility and was appointed Vice President and Head of Biology in the Psychiatry Centre of Excellence in Drug Discovery at GSK. 

In addition to his GMEC role he is a member of the Board of Directors at Imanova, Senior Research Fellow in Neuroscience at Heptares Therapeutics and a Trustee of The Epilepsy Society.
